Flat Plan for My Front Cover
Flat plan for my cover from Hannah Ould
Rationale
My front cover will have one dominant image framed by
numerous different sell lines and a few sub images. I was inspired by
'Seventeen', 'Top of the Pops' and 'Cosmopolitan' for my front cover. The
dominant image will be a medium close-up at eye-level of my model. The
mise-en-scene will be outside in a park surrounded by autumnal leaves from
trees. Seventeen magazine has similar covers to this, except theirs is taken in
summer with the sun shining. The language and register will be informal as my
magazine is aimed at 11-13-year-old girls and they will respond better to
informal language (such as: puns, slang, internet lingo, etc.). The colour
scheme will consist of pastel colours: pink, purple, blue, etc. My model will
be wearing a beige coat and black jeans. My model will be smiling and will have
a happy facial expression so that the target audience will have a more positive
response when they pick it up. She will, also, have a fun/informal pose so that
she seems relaxed and at ease so that the audience will feel welcomed when
buying the magazine. As well as this, my model will be looking to the right –
symbolising that she is looking forward to the future. The lighting will be
natural lighting enhanced by the flash on my camera to give a more professional
look to it.
The masthead will be written in ‘Chocolate Dealer’ from
dafont.com to give it a unique, feminine look. The name of the magazine is ‘Lyrix’
and this will be written in pink in the top left hand corner of the magazine
overlapping the top banner. The masthead will take up two thirds of the way
along the page so that it captures the audience’s attention and draws them in
to the magazine. Next to the masthead the name of the model will be written in ‘Olympic
Branding’ from dafont.com in blue. This will contrast the pink of the masthead
and add a nice juxtaposition to the page, making the models name stand out.
The top banner will be light pink with ‘Real Life Stories’, ‘Special
Edition’ and ‘Posters’ written in ‘Hollywood’ from dafont.com in alternating
colours of white and purple to make sure that the audience can distinguish
between the words and to make it more eye-catching. If the audience sees that
this is a special edition they may be more likely to buy the magazine.
The main sell line will say “Katie’s Comeback” in ‘Thinking
of Betty’ from dafont.com. This will be situated on a slight diagonal slant in
the bottom half of the page in a light blue. The consonance of the ‘K’ sound in
the main sell line will make the words roll of the readers tongue as well as
making it stick in the audiences head, meaning they will be more likely to buy
it.
Underneath the models name will be a sub image of a bands
posters. This will attract the attention of the target audience as many young
girls have boy bands posters in their bedrooms – the fact that the magazine is
advertising free posters will make the target audience more likely to pick the
magazine up and buy it.
Source Existing Magazines
Source exisiting magazines from Hannah Ould
Here are the magazine covers that I have chosen to be the inspiration for my own front cover. I have chosen 'Seventeen', 'Top of the Pops' and 'Cosmopolitan' to be the inspiration for the front cover of my magazine. The reason I have chosen 'Seventeen' and 'Cosmopolitan' is because I really like the busy yet structured layout of the front cover. I, also, like the way that the models each have a different pose in these magazines - as if they are showing their personality through the pictures. I would like my magazine to have a similar look to it. The reason that I have chosen 'Top of the Pops' is because I like the use of sub images. I will try and cooperate each of these layouts into my own layout for my magazine.

Start of Lesson
In this lesson I plan to find some existing magazines which I will source as inspiration for the layout of the front cover of my magazine. I will, also, begin to create the front cover of my magazine.
End of Lesson
In this lesson I have identified which magazines are my source inspiration. I have, also, written a flat plan and rationale for my front cover. As well as, started my own front cover.

Location Scout
The places where I have decided to take my pictures are my house and Hylton Castle park. I have chosen my house as it is easy for my model to get to and we can take the pictures at any time. I have chosen Hylton Castle Park as it is only a 10 minute walk from my house and has beautiful scenery - we, also, do not need permission to take pictures there as it is a public area.

Reader Profile
Reader profile from Hannah Ould
From my reader profile I can tell that my magazine should be a monthy magazine as the majority of the target audience only read magazines once or twice a month. My magazine should be about £2.50 as the majoruty of people usually spend between £2 and £3 on magazines and will therefore probably be unwilling to spend more than that. The majority of the audience is female and so the magazine should mainlt cater to girls and the mjority of the audience are 13-year-old and so the magazine, should, also cater to 13-year-olds. The fact that most of the audience dont play with games consoles suggests that there shouldn't be any features on gaming. However, due to the fact that most spend more than five hours watching TV shows and YouTube, respectively, shows that there could be features on YouTube and TV shows (perhaps musician YouTubers or music related TV show).

Contents Page
Reflection
The contents page ended up staying very similar to the flat plan that we designed. As well as this, the colour scheme stayed the same as the front over (blue and white to match the college logo). The page consists of a top and bottom banner, page name, social media links, one dominat image, two sub images, article names and essential information. Instead if having the essential information in the bottom left hand corner like in the flat plan, the social media links are there instead and the essential information is in the top banner. In the bottom banner there is a credit to the editors. The photos are all mid shots. I believe that this all works very well with the tone of the magazine as it quite clearly matches the front cover and has a proffessional look to it. However, I am aware that I need more practice in the future so that I can improve.
Front Cover
Reflection
The front cover of the magazine ended up being slightly different from the flat plan that I created. For example, I added a bottom banner to the magazine and put the essential information in there and moved the barcode to under the masthead on the right hand side. The price stayed in the same place on the left hand side under the masthead. I, also, put the masthead in a banner underneath the top banner, this is so that it is easily readible. Each of the sub images is on a white square along with the sell line that goes with it so that it is easy readable. The puff/plug is on a white cirlce in blue writing to attract people to it. The sub images and sell lines frame the dominant image with the main sell line in blue writing on the bottom of the dominant image. The main sell line in the only writing other than the price that is not in a box or shape - this makes it stand out the most. The camera angle of the dominant image is the same as what I said in the ratioanle for the flat plan. I believe that our front cover looks very proffessional but it is clear that I do need some more practice.
Flat Plan for the Contents Page
Flat plan contents page from Hannah Ould
Rationale
The masthead will be situated in the top left hand corner of
the contents page with the issue number next to it on the right hand side. The
date will be underneath the masthead and all the sell lines/article names will
be underneath that. The dominant image will be on the right hand side of the
sell lines. There will be three sub images situated around the dominant image.
Each of the images will be of a different part of the college and each of the
sell lines will be something to do with the college. The essential information
will be under the sell lines but will only be small so that it does not detract
from the sell lines and dominant image. The colour scheme will be the same as
the front cover; blue and white to match the college logo.
Flat Plan for Front Cover
Flat plan front cover from Hannah Ould
Rationale
My front cover of the college magazine will have the
dominant image framed by surrounding sub images and sell lines. The masthead will
be at the top of the page with a top banner above it and the main sell line
will be in front of the dominant image. Underneath the main sell line, in the
bottom right hand corner will be the essential information such as the barcode,
date and issue number. Opposite this in the bottom left hand corner will be a
puff/plug. Underneath the masthead on the left hand side will be the price of
the magazine. The price will be fairly cheap as the target audience for the
magazine is college students. The camera angle on the dominant image will be a
mix between a medium shot and a crane shot so that it will be slightly above
eye level. The colour scheme of the magazine cover will be a light blue and
white to match the college logo. The font throughout the front cover will be a
regal/old-fashioned style typography to match the feel of the college building.
Due to the fact that there will be no people on the front cover it does not require
there to be any costume, hair or makeup.

Start of Lesson
In this lesson I will design a flat plan for a front cover and contents page for a college magazine and write a rationale for this. I will take the pictures for the front cover and contents page and I will then create my front cover and contents page on photoshop.
End of Lesson
In this lesson we have designed a flat plan of a front cover and contents page on paper and then transferred it to the computer on Word. We then took our photos for our magazine in and around the college. We, also, created our front cover and contents page on photoshop and uploaded them to our blogs.

Start of Lesson
In this lesson I will have a play around on photoshop and try to create a magazine front cover for a music magazine. In my magazine cover I will adda masthead, barcode, price, issue number, freebies, pugs and top/bottom banners. I will, hopefully, learn some new features and how to use photoshop.
End of Lesson
During this lesson I have attempted to create a magazine cover on photoshop, although it is not too great. I have learned how to use some of the features in photoshop and have managed to add some major features of a front cover to it.

Front Cover Draft
Here is my first draft of a magazine cover. From this I feel like I need a lot more photoshop practice as my draft is not great. I have learned some basic functions on photoshop such as the magic wand tool, the magic eraser, text and free transform. Overall, I think for a first attempt this is not too bad. Next time, however, I will try and perfect my cutting out skills and attempt to produce a more professional looking magazine. This has helped me understand how to use photoshop basically and know that I need more practice.

Start of Lesson
In this lesson I will be doing my location scout (where I will be identifying three different possibilities for locations). I will, also, be doing my model organisation - emailing my model, telling the model what the brief is, the genre, target audience, facial expression/poses/body language, what clothes to wear, how to have their makeup/hair, costume changes.
End of Lesson
In this lesson I have started my location scout and have picked a few different locations that I could use. I have, also, emailed my model telling them what would be expected of them. As well as this, I have chosen one of the costumes that my model should wear and have collected images into a moodboard of facial expression and poses that I like for my model.
